Triller Files Patent Infringement Lawsuit Against TikTok
Triller capitalizes on the timing of increasing scrutiny against its biggest rival, TikTok and parent company ByteDance, by dishing a patent lawsuit. It has been filed in the U.S District Court for the Western Division of Texas.
📱 Claims TikTok is infringing on Triller’s U.S Patent No. 9,691,429 that covers “systems and methods for creating music videos synchronized with an audio track.”
📱 Triller’s patent originally filed on 4/11/15 and granted on 6/27/17- to create videos syncing to audio.
📱 TikTok’s “green screen video” which produces the same effect, was announced on 12/11/19.
📱 TikTok was served notice of its infringement on July 27, 2020 by way of email.
In response to TikTok’s proposed influencer funds, Triller CEO, Mike Lu, state he was “shocked to learn TikTok is actually using their influencer funds to pay influencers to actually not post on Triller”. Triller’s timing comes during an additional raise of funds set around $200-300M at an approximate valuation of $130M.
